Diverse Leadership Needed in Long-Term Care Organizations

More than ever before, long-term care organizations are seeking female and minority C-suite executive leaders. As patient and staff demographics change, so too must the demographics of organization leaders. “This thinking demonstrates a commitment to culturally competent care, where caregivers are respectful and responsive to different backgrounds and their impact on healthy outcomes,” writes Witt/Kieffer consultant Rachel Polhemus in a recent article.

Long-term care organizations are now approaching diversity recruiting in a strategic, mission-driven way. Often, long-term care organizations must find diverse candidates within human resources and operations service lines. “It can be more challenging to recruit diverse candidates for Chief Nursing Officers, Chief Financial Officers and Chief Information Officers in healthcare,” says Polhemus. “As long-term care organizations respond to healthcare reform by consolidating and partnering with other providers, there is growing demand for strategic planners and business developers who understand the dynamics of the post-acute world.”
