Emerging Healthcare Leaders Face Challenges

Thursday, January 19, 2012
First-time healthcare leaders are finding an environment unlike that of their predecessors, according to a recent Becker’s Hospital Review article. In addition to health reform, emerging hospital CEOs are experiencing new trends and workplace issues that might impact their success.
Hospital boards are more flexible than in recent years in selecting leadership, and as a result, leaders are coming from a variety of different environments. “I think healthcare leadership is wide open right now,” Witt/Kieffer Senior Vice President Kim Smith said. “It’s a time when lots of different people will rise to the top of organizations.” As healthcare evolves and brings its focus on collaboration, Smith says it’s important for CEOs to emphasize a cooperative attitude and abandon the divide-and-conquer mindset.
Emerging leaders will also find cultural challenges and a more demanding schedule as they take the reins of an organization. Senior management teams can help ease the transition by adopting a mindset of group success. "Preparing that [senior management] group before the new hire starts is critical," says Smith said. "There will need to be key traits complemented by the team, so that will reassure them that they all still have a place."
