Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano recently announced she is stepping down to become president of the University of California system. As Napolitano seizes this new career opportunity, some feel she is trading one challenging role for another. John Thornburgh, managing partner of Witt/Kieffer’s higher education practice, recently spoke with the Washington Post.

“The size and scope speaks for itself, but what is really challenging there is the diversity,” Thornburgh says of the University of California system. “Not just in the students, but in the institutions — you have everything from large research institutes with prestigious scholars to more comprehensive ones that focus on undergraduate teaching.”
