Finding the right leader can be a daunting task. Organizations might seek counsel about executive search, particularly when resources are limited.  Elaina Genser, Witt/Kieffer senior vice president, provides internal search best practices for hiring executives in Leadership Excellence.

There are important steps before the search, during the search and before a hiring decision is made. For example, before the process is underway the position profile must be crafted and agreed upon by the necessary decision makers. “Work with key stakeholders to get the position profile just right,” says Genser. “A well crafted job description boosts the odds that suitable candidates will apply.” During the search, it’s important for recruiters to consider qualified internal candidates and cast a wide net.

Before a candidate is hired, any communication regarding a decision should follow a protocol. Genser adds, “A good search process goes bad quickly when unofficial information leaks out early.”
