How to Negotiate a Pay Package

Candidates negotiating a compensation package can benefit from preparation and flexibility. Executives should research salary ranges and trends before accepting a job, while maintaining flexibility to stay at the top of the employer’s list. Christine Mackey-Ross, Witt/Kieffer managing partner, tells USA Today, “Most employers have a backup candidate and you can take yourself out of the running quickly with unrealistic demands.”

While preparing for the negotiation process, candidates need to prioritize: what they feel they must have in order to accept an offer; what is optional; and what they care least about and would be willing to give up in order to get something else.
