There is a limited pool of physician leaders available to guide organizations through health reform - although the demand is great, writes Witt/Kieffer consultant Linda Komnick in a recent Hospitals & Health Networks article. “Given the scarcity, health care organizations are in fierce competition with each other to attract and retain physician executives, especially the select few who combine stellar resumés with strong managerial and relational skills,” Komnick writes.

Healthcare organizations must find other ways to attract candidates. One such way is to establish support for the position by creating clearly defined roles, authority and deliverables for the physician executive. “Strong candidates will be looking for these signs of preparedness,” says Komnick. “They also will want to know how, once on board, they'll be supported in the critical first few months on the job.”
