Retirees Prevalent on Corporate Boards

Retired executives are taking different paths to the boardroom after retirement. Board service may not come with the same perks it had in recent years, but it certainly offers an intellectual challenge for many in the years following retirement. Jim Gauss, Witt/Kieffer Chairman of Board Services, gives advice to those seeking board seats in a recent article.

More often than not, finding board success depends on having special knowledge or experience rather than knowing a specific industry. “You’ll be in hottest demand if you were a CEO or CFO, or had board experience before retirement,” says Gauss. “If it’s too late for that, you can earn your director chops at startups or nonprofits.”
