Winston-Salem State University seeks nominations for and expressions of interest in the position of Associate Dean for the Division of Nursing in the School of Health Sciences.
Winston-Salem State University, a premier regional, comprehensive, liberal arts university, is one of 16 constituent institutions in the University of North Carolina. Located in the Piedmont Triad between Greensboro and High Point, the university enrolls more than 5,500 students in more than 40 bachelor's degree programs and seven master's degree programs. Designated a focused-growth institution, Winston-Salem State University has more than doubled its enrollment since 2002 and is targeted to grow to more than 8,000 students by 2015, with a concomitant growth in programs, specifically at the master's level. The School of Health Sciences (SOHS) offers programs leading to both the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the Master of Science in Nursing degrees. (The SOHS also offers degrees in Clinical Laboratory Science, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy).
The Associate Dean for the Division of Nursing oversees strategic planning activities for the Division and provides leadership in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and evaluating plans for the educational programs. The Division of Nursing has an enrollment of 1,215 students. The Associate Dean's position is the top position within the Division of Nursing and reports Dr. Peggy Valentine, the Dean of the School of Health Sciences.
The Associate Dean's responsibilities include: administering WSSU and the School of Health Sciences' policies relating to students and faculty; advising the departmental faculty committees in the development and administration of policies relating to student services; maintaining effective working relationships with multidisciplinary health professionals for planning and problem-solving; annually reviewing and initiating contracts with clinical agencies; maintaining and submitting reports for the Division's programs in compliance with WSSU policy and accrediting standards; supervising Chairs and Directors responsible for the educational programs within the Division of Nursing; participating in the community's educational and professional arenas to promote the Division's programs; assuring that curricula are contemporary and consistent with standards of the profession; preparing and maintaining budgets and equipment and seeking alternate funding sources, such as grants and partnerships; participating in the strategic planning process for the Division of Nursing.
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications: an earned doctorate with a master's degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university; eligible to obtain RN licensure in North Carolina; minimum of ten years experience in baccalaureate and/or higher degree nursing education; curriculum development/implementation/ evaluation; clinical nursing practice; and distance education delivery systems. Minimum of five years experience in administration leadership at the Chair, Director or Associate or Deanship level; established track record in research and federal grant management; sustained history of funded scholarship; experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation; established track record as an effective administrator including consulting in nursing or a related fields; leadership skills and the ability to engage faculty and build consensus; effective communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
