Job Description

Mike and Josie Harper Cancer Research Institute/University of Notre Dame
Science Director
Notre Dame, IN

The University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame) seeks an outstanding academic leader and researcher as the new Science Director of the Mike and Josie Harper Cancer Research Institute.

Notre Dame has identified cancer research as an important future research focus of the university and has developed a collaborative strategy with the Indiana University School of Medicine to support this goal. Notre Dame received a $10 million contribution to support cancer research from the family foundation of Mike Harper. The Legislature of the State of Indiana has matched the Harper gift with a $10 million allocation and plans are proceeding on the construction of a $20 million cancer research building which will house the Mike and Josie Harper Cancer Research Institute (Harper Institute). In collaboration with the IU School of Medicine, the Harper Institute will offer a unique and collaborative platform across all academic disciplines at Notre Dame to create a targeted, well-funded, collaborative cancer research and training program to advance the understanding, prevention and treatment of cancer. This research initiative builds upon strategic partnerships with the IU School of Medicine, Purdue University, and the Walther Cancer Foundation.

The Science Director, Harper Institute, is responsible for its leadership and has primary responsibility and authority for organizing, managing, and facilitating multidisciplinary cancer research within the Harper Institute. The Science Director will be in charge of coordinating all efforts in cancer research and will facilitate the expansion of resources from both intramural and extramural funding sources as well as the recruitment of additional investigators in cancer research. The Science Director will report administratively to the Provost of the University of Notre Dame and operationally to the Vice President for Research.

We seek a well-established scientist with a doctorate in physical, medical or life sciences and a distinguished record of scholarly/scientific accomplishments in basic cancer research with the current rank of Professor. He or she should have prior administrative and leadership experience gained within a multi-investigator research program and strong interpersonal and communication skills that complement a passion for excellence and achievement.
