Job Description

Capital University
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
Columbus, OH

The president, board of trustees, faculty, and staff of Capital University invite nominations and applications for the position of provost and vice president for academic affairs. The provost and vice president for academic affairs is the chief academic officer of the university, reports directly to the president, and is the chief executive officer of the university in the absence of the president. Start date is expected to be January 1, 2009.

Capital University is a comprehensive, independent university, grounded in the Lutheran tradition. Founded in 1830, it is the oldest and one of the largest universities affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Capital University combines personal attention with a balanced liberal arts and professional studies education to prepare students for lifelong learning, leadership, and service. It offers diverse programs in the arts, sciences, law, and professions to a total undergraduate and graduate student population of approximately 3,800. Capital University's 50-acre campus lies in the attractive, tree-lined suburb of Bexley, just minutes from the cultural, government, and business hub of Ohio's capital city, the third fastest growing major metropolitan area in the Midwest. More information on the university may be found at its web-site: www.capital.edu.

In the fall of 2007, Capital University inaugurated its 15th president, Dr. Denvy Bowman, who has launched a strategic planning process designed to focus and guide the university as it seeks to strengthen its mission, purpose, and commitment to academic excellence. Capital seeks a new academic leader with the experience and integrity to join the strategic planning process and to advance the academic program of the university.

The successful candidate will have senior academic leadership experience including experience in strategic planning, budgeting, assessment, and demonstrated collaborative leadership. In addition, the university seeks a person who:

  • Is a strategic thinker, a team builder, and an individual of unquestioned integrity;
  • Possesses a strong record of teaching, scholarship, and service appropriate to a tenured faculty position;
  • Supports the academic mission of the university;

  • Demonstrates a history of collaborative decision making and has outstanding communication skills;
  • Supports the religious heritage of the university and its commitment to diversity;
  • Welcomes interactions with students, parents, faculty, and other constituents; and
  • Is knowledgeable about contemporary higher education theory and practice.

Preliminary review will begin on June 15 and priority will be given to applications received by this date. The search will remain open until the position is filled.
