The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, seeks an outstanding leader and researcher as the new Deputy Director, Cancer Center.
A non-profit institution founded in 1929, The Jackson Laboratory is the world's largest mammalian genetic research facility. As the world center for studying the mouse as a model of human disease, The Jackson Laboratory is at the forefront of the genetics revolution that is transforming medicine for the benefit of humanity. The Laboratory's scientists study a wide range of human disorders, including cancer, AIDS, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and heart disease. In addition, the global scientific community relies on The Jackson Laboratory to supply genetics resources. Each year, the Laboratory supplies universities, medical schools and research laboratories all over the world with approximately 2 million JAX®Mice from more than 2,800 unique strains of mice.
The Jackson Laboratory's Cancer Center has held an NCI Center Support Grant since 1983, with the most recent five-year renewal awarded in 2007. Currently, the Cancer Center has 58 members. The Laboratory fosters research into the biology and genetics of cancer with major research areas in cancer initiation, disease progression and detection, and therapy. Members of the Cancer Center collaborate with a number of institutions, including the Maine Institute for Human Genetics & Health/Cancer Center of Maine, Maine Medical Center Research Institute and Boston Children's Hospital.
The Deputy Director of the Cancer Center will guide the development of the vision for the Cancer Center and cancer research at the Laboratory, provide implementation of that vision and contribute to the direction and success of the Laboratory as a whole as an active member of the Laboratory's leadership team. Reporting to the Associate Director and Chair of Research, the Deputy Director will play a pivotal role in the recruitment of cancer-related researchers, the administration of the Cancer Center and in developing and extending Laboratory-wide research opportunities in cancer research.
The Jackson Laboratory seeks a well-established scientist with a doctorate in physical, medical or life sciences and a distinguished record of scholarly/scientific accomplishments in basic cancer research with the current rank of at least Associate Professor. He or she should have prior leadership experience gained within a multi-investigator research program and strong interpersonal and communication skills that complement a passion for excellence and achievement. Familiarity with the NCI designated Cancer Centers program is strongly desired.
