Job Description

West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine
President
Lewisburg, WV

West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) is seeking nominations and applications for the position of President. This individual will succeed Dr. Olen E. Jones, who is stepping down after having served WVSOM with great distinction since 1987.

WVSOM is a nationally ranked, award winning medical school with a world class reputation and is committed to serving its students with a high quality osteopathic medical education. The school admits approximately 200 new students each year. Its spectacular campus is situated in Lewisburg, West Virginia and is minutes away from the renowned Greenbrier resort. WVSOM has been ranked as one of the best medical schools in the country for ten consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report magazine, including a Top 20 ranking in Family Medicine and a Top 50 ranking in Primary Care.

In recent years, WVSOM has grown enrollment and built a strong financial base, and expanded facilities through new construction and the modernization of older buildings. All of this has been accomplished without incurring any debt. WVSOM has taken deliberate steps to improve the quality of its academic programs and course offerings over the past two decades, which has led to the positive national rankings that it has achieved.

The new president will be expected to build on this strong foundation, and intensify efforts to evaluate and invest in WVSOM's programs, faculty and staff; serve as a diligent steward of WVSOM's facilities and resources; accelerate external fundraising efforts; and foster strong relationships with key internal and external constituents.

The ideal candidates will present the credentials of a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, a Ph.D., an Ed.D., or an earned doctorate in a related field and a deep appreciation for osteopathic medicine and medical education. Candidates should also convey a passion for the provision of primary care in rural and underserved communities. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to obtain funding from external sources, including individual donors, to effectively steward medical school resources, and to understand the business of academic medicine and research. The successful candidate's experience must include progressively responsible administrative experience in environments that rely on vision, teamwork, planning, delegation of authority, and measures of accountability.

Nominations, expressions of interest, and applications (including a cover letter and resume) should be submitted via email to WVSOMPresident@wittkieffer.com. Recruitment will continue until the position is filled, with a preferred start date of the new President of January, 2009.
