San Jose State University (SJSU) -- an exciting comprehensive public university located in the heart of Silicon Valley, the world's high tech capital -- invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Founded in 1857, SJSU is the oldest public institution of higher education on the West Coast and one of the largest of the 23 California State University campuses with approximately 31,000 students. The Dean serves as the senior administrator and is the principal champion for innovative vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the College of Applied Sciences and Arts (CASA) comprised of four schools and seven departments. Its academic programs include: Aerospace; Gerontology; Health Professions; Health Science; Hospitality, Recreation & Tourism Management; Journalism & Mass Communications; Justice Studies; Kinesiology; Library & Information Science; Military Science; Nursing; Nutrition, Food Science, & Packaging; Occupational Therapy; and Social Work. The College of Applied Sciences and Arts has over 430 total faculty members and offers both liberal and well-defined professional education at the undergraduate and graduate levels to more than 7,000 full and part-time students.

The Dean is responsible for coordination of the College's academic planning; assessment of curriculum and instruction; recruitment and evaluation of faculty and staff; development of professional opportunities for faculty and staff; budgeting and fiscal management; and, allocation and use of facilities. The Dean represents the College and University in community, corporate, and professional organizations and agencies, and works to develop resources from internal and external connections to further the goals of the College and University, and to broaden the base of community support.

The ideal candidate will be an innovative and visionary leader with high integrity who will work collegially with University leadership, the College of Applied Sciences and Arts faculty and staff, and within a shared governance structure to develop, articulate, and achieve the strategic goals of CASA and SJSU. The Dean should have at least five years in academic or administrative positions of increasing responsibility and provide evidence from previous experience of energetic leadership and administrative competency in leading a diverse college community with broad curricular offerings. This position requires a doctorate in one of the College's disciplines and an outstanding record of teaching and scholarly achievement (commensurate with the rank of full professor) with evidence of significant continuing professional activity. The individual would demonstrate knowledge, skills, and expertise related to an academic discipline and is recognized as a teacher and scholar allowing the candidate to have retreat rights to a Department or School in the College.
