The State University of New York College at New Paltz seeks an exceptional academic leader to become its next provost and invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position.
Founded in 1828, SUNY New Paltz is a highly selective, state-assisted, four-year comprehensive college of about 7,800 undergraduate and graduate students. Recognized for its academic excellence and its unique appeal to students, the college offers 100 undergraduate and 50 graduate programs in a challenging, diverse, student-centered and personalized environment. Degrees are offered in the liberal arts and sciences, which serve as a core for professional programs in the fine and performing arts, education, healthcare, business and engineering. Named the "Hottest Small State School" in the nation in the 2008 Kaplan/Newsweek How To Get Into College Guide, SUNY New Paltz was also recently ranked 8th among the best public universities and 40th among public and private universities in the North according to the 2009 U.S. News & World Report rankings. Located in the scenic Hudson River Valley, the college is situated halfway between Albany and New York City.
Reporting directly to the president, the provost serves as the college's chief academic officer and has primary responsibility for the planning, development and evaluation of all academic programs and operations. He or she will be a senior leader with significant administrative responsibility for strategic planning, budgeting and fiscal management. The provost will also possess a commitment to quality, accessible public higher education and knowledge of national education issues. Most importantly, the provost will be a strong proponent of academic excellence and rigor. He or she will set high standards and bring a renewed focus on quality to academic initiatives across the institution.
The candidate will have a doctoral degree with evidence of scholarly achievement and professional service commensurate with a senior academic rank and tenure. He or she will have a collaborative management style, transparency in decision-making and have a record of success in building academic programs. The provost will also have a deep respect for faculty governance and for a process of consultation. He or she will be a person of absolute integrity, a genuine team player and a supportive leader of deans and department chairs with a commitment to enhancing diversity among faculty, staff and students.
