Founded in 1828, SUNY New Paltz is a highly selective, state-assisted, four-year comprehensive college of about 7,800 undergraduate and graduate students. Recognized for its academic excellence and its unique appeal to students, the college offers 100 undergraduate and 50 graduate programs in a challenging, diverse, student-centered and personalized environment. Degrees are offered in the liberal arts and sciences, which serve as a core for professional programs in the fine and performing arts, education, healthcare, business and engineering. Named the "Hottest Small State School" in the nation in the 2008 Kaplan/Newsweek How To Get Into College Guide, SUNY New Paltz was also recently ranked 8th among the best public universities and 40th among public and private universities in the North according to the 2009 U.S. News & World Report rankings. Located in the scenic Hudson River Valley, the college is situated halfway between Albany and New York City.

Reporting directly to the president, the provost serves as the college's chief academic officer and has primary responsibility for the planning, development and evaluation of all academic programs and operations.
