Job Description

Fordham University
Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences
Manhattan, the Bronx and Westchester, NY

Fordham University invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. As the Jesuit University of New York, Fordham fosters the intellectual, moral and religious development of its students and prepares them for leadership in a global society. Both reflecting and contributing to the vibrancy of New York City, Fordham is thriving as it aggressively pursues the goals set forth in its strategic plan, Toward 2016, and most especially the plan's ultimate goal, "to reclaim its position as the premier Catholic university in the nation."

The strength of Arts and Sciences is at the heart of achieving this goal. The Dean provides leadership in the development of the Arts and Sciences, working closely with the School and College Deans, chairpersons and faculty, and reporting to the Senior Vice President/Chief Academic Officer of the University. The Schools and Colleges of Arts and Sciences include Fordham College Lincoln Center, Fordham College at Rose Hill (located in the Bronx), the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and Fordham College of Liberal Studies (a degree completion program located at Lincoln Center, Rose Hill, and a new campus in Westchester). Fordham's 10 Schools enroll over 14,000 students, including almost 8,000 undergraduates. Within Arts and Sciences, there are 5,700 undergraduates and 700 graduate students enrolled in bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs in Arts and Sciences.

The Dean strives to promote excellence in teaching, research and service. He or she has responsibility for faculty, and coordinating responsibility for programs, planning and budgets, providing leadership for strategic planning and the development of collaborations. The Dean solicits budget and financial proposals from the School and College Deans and presents recommendations on those budgets to the Senior Vice President/Chief Academic Officer. The Dean is an advocate for the Arts and Sciences within the University, and a voice in the national Arts and Sciences arena as well. A detailed position description is available below and should be consulted before application materials are prepared.

Interested persons should review additional information about Fordham, its Jesuit identity, and the expectations and qualifications for the position at www.fordham.edu/fasdeansearch. Applicants should provide a letter describing their interest in and qualifications for the position, a CV, and the names and contact information for five references. These materials should be sent electronically to Fordham's consultants, Jean Dowdall, Ph.D., and Elizabeth Bohan, at FordhamDeanFAS@wittkieffer.com. Items that must be mailed may be sent to them at Witt/Kieffer, 2015 Spring Road, Suite 510, Oak Brook IL 60523.

This search will be conducted with full confidentiality; candidates will be notified before references are contacted. Review of candidates will begin in December, with an appointment to be made early in 2009, and a preferred starting date as soon as possible thereafter. For full consideration, all materials should be received by November 24. Compensation for this position is highly competitive.

Fordham University is an independent Catholic University in the Jesuit tradition that welcomes men and women of all backgrounds. Fordham is an equal opportunity employer.
