The American University in Cairo invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

We are searching for a Dean who can lead, represent and administer the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Dean will be the chief academic officer of the school, and will provide leadership in all academic matters, with responsibility for coordinating, evaluating and improving curricula and programs, for recruiting new faculty, and for promoting excellence in instruction and research.

The Dean will be the principal administrative officer of the school, with supervisory authority over its management and operations. The Dean will be administratively responsible to the Provost, and through the Provost, to the President. The Dean will be a member of the Provost's Council and an ex-officio voting member of the University Senate.

The Dean will be the representative of the faculty of the school, with the authority and responsibility to represent their views and to promote their best interests as an academic entity. The Dean will have the general responsibility to communicate the views and positions of the school faculty to the administration and those of the administration to the school faculty. The Dean will represent the school to other divisions of the university as well as to external publics.

As the chief personnel officer of the school, the Dean will review all departmental recommendations related to such issues as new appointments, re-appointments, performance evaluations, salary changes, merit, terminations of contracts, leaves of absence, tenure and promotion. The Dean will be responsible for forwarding personnel recommendations to the Provost.

As the chief fiscal officer of the school, the Dean will be responsible for the effective and efficient use of budgetary resources. The Dean will determine resource priorities in accordance with long-range plans and be responsible for the preparation of the school's budget.

Salary and benefits are competitive, based on qualifications and professional experience. For expatriates, the University provides housing, annual travel for home leave, and educational benefits for dependents at the University and, for up to two children, at select local private primary and elementary schools. This appointment will be made in winter 2009-10, and the position will begin in Summer 2010.
