Scripps College, the women's college of The Claremont Colleges Consortium in Claremont, California, invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Scripps today is one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the nation. Scripps' distinctive liberal arts curriculum is founded on a challenging and distinctive core curriculum of interdisciplinary study in the Humanities with broad and rigorous offerings in the liberal arts and sciences, the capstone of which is the senior thesis. Founded in 1926 by Ellen Browning Scripps, philanthropist and newspaper entrepreneur, Scripps' mission from the beginning has been "to develop in its students the ability to think clearly and independently, and the ability to live confidently, courageously, and hopefully."
As the chief academic officer of the College, the Dean of Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs is the leader of the faculty and provides oversight for the development and implementation of all academic policies and programs. The Dean of Faculty serves as the representative of the faculty to the Board of Trustees, the President, and the other senior officers of the College, and has significant responsibility in promoting the mission of the College and implementing changes to the curriculum brought about by initiatives in the strategic plan. Working within a strong system of shared governance, the Dean of Faculty oversees development of academic budgets, advises the President on faculty appointments and promotions, and serves as the Chair of the college-wide budget committee. In addition to oversight of all academic programs at Scripps, the Dean of Faculty has key responsibilities in the negotiation and oversight of a variety of intercollegiate academic programs within The Claremont Colleges Consortium, most notably the Joint Science Program.
The successful candidate will have an earned Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree, with the credentials appropriate to be tenured at the rank of full professor, and should possess substantial administrative experience.
