Genomic Institute at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine
Director
New York, NY

Mount Sinai Medical Center is seeking an outstanding leader to serve as director of the newly established Genomic Institute at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. This initiative is the top strategic priority for Mount Sinai, of great importance to its continued evolution, and presents a rare opportunity for a gifted leader to shape a major new initiative at a great institution with a storied past to new levels of discovery and excellence.

The Mount Sinai School of Medicine seeks to establish a core technology and computational-based institute for genomics, proteomics and metabolomics to enable its researchers to carry out cutting-edge basic and translational research. The institute will provide the equipment for state-of-the-art and emerging technologies, as well as the computational and analytical expertise and support to analyze the enormous amounts of experimental data. It will support interdisciplinary, interdepartmental research groups in basic and disease-focused efforts to delineate the role of genes in basic biologic processes as well as in disease pathogenesis, and to use that information to improve health care. It will develop new methodologies and analytic tools for genomic, proteomic, and metabolomic research. It seeks to become the premiere genomics institute in the New York metropolitan area.

The founding director will set the course for the rapid evolution of the Genomics Institute, attracting faculty, technical and support staff for its operation and broadening and extending its resources. The director, together with the associate directors for genomics, proteomics/metabolomics and computational genomics, will shape its programs and services and overall strategic direction. In addition, the institute will provide a concierge service to assist investigators in experimental design and experimental techniques and analyses. The continuous development and acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment and technologies will be a core activity. The director will establish a culture of discovery at the leading edge of scientific endeavor and will develop connections to science and practice in departments, centers and institutes across The Mount Sinai Medical Center. The director will also lead the development of an educational program, including a master's degree program in biotechnology and a Ph.D. program in computational genomics in conjunction with the Mount Sinai Graduate School. The director will have primary responsibility for management of financial resources of the institute, assuring its financial viability, and will direct the design and use of institute space in the new Center for Science and Medicine, scheduled to open in 2012. The director will report to the Mount Sinai Dean for Genetics and Genomics and the Dean of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

The successful candidate will be a world-class funded scientist with a Ph.D., M.D. or both degrees. Prospective candidates must demonstrate expertise in genomics and/or computational genomics/bioinformatics. He or she must have a proven ability to attract and recruit other researchers and faculty and be an entrepreneurial and self-assured leader who can embody the highest standards of scholarship, invention, and creativity that will characterize the institute. An outstanding record of scholarly achievement is required in order to qualify for tenure at an advanced rank.
