Job Description

Rowan University
Vice President for University Advancement
Glassboro, NJ

Rowan University, a growing public Master's university located in southern New Jersey, invites applications and nominations for a high-energy professional to assume the position of Vice President for University Advancement.

Since its founding in 1923 as a school for teachers to its current status as a top-rated, regional institution, Rowan University has had a remarkable history. Such landmark events as the 1967 Summit Conference between President Lyndon Johnson and Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin at Hollybush to the $100 million dollar gift from Henry and Betty Rowan in 1992 have truly put Rowan on the map as a place of current and future leaders and professionals. Under the leadership of the University's President, Donald Farish, the institution has been engaged in an aggressive improvement plan that has given the university a national reputation for excellence and innovation and has made it the public university of choice in the region with a strong focus on academic and student support initiatives as well as a $500 million campus construction and renovation plan. The University is in the process of developing Cooper Medical School at Rowan University in association with Cooper University Hospital, in Camden, NJ which will welcome its first class in 2012 and will significantly expand graduate programs at Rowan University. Existing programs will dovetail with a medical school curriculum providing for future expansion of science, technology and allied health degrees. Rowan offers outstanding educational opportunities at an exceptional value and is able to compete with private colleges and create opportunities not available on most state university campuses.

Reporting directly to a dynamic President who has a strong commitment to fundraising, the vice president serves on the President's Cabinet and is the Executive Director of the Rowan University Foundation. He/she will be responsible for providing the leadership for all aspects of fundraising and alumni relations. The Division of University Advancement has a strong, capable and well trained staff across the board with particular strength in major gifts, corporate and foundation giving, alumni relations and research. The office aligns its fundraising initiatives with the strategic plan and ten-year vision of the University and has been successful in developing a culture of philanthropy including securing 15 gifts of $1 million or more since the Rowan Gift was received.

The position of Vice President for University Advancement requires a bachelor's degree; an advanced degree is desirable. Candidates should possess a track record of fundraising management within a complex organization, preferably in a higher education setting. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate a record of cultivating, soliciting and closing major gifts; organizing and operating capital campaigns; recruiting and managing staff; and forging productive relationships with a broad range of constituents. Excellent interpersonal, team building and communication skills are required.

Candidate review will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Expressions of interest by applicants and/or nominations should be sent (e-mail preferred) to Rowan University's search consultants:
