Founded in 1913, City of Hope (COH) is an innovative biomedical research, treatment and educational institution, dedicated to the prevention, treatment and cure of cancer and other life-threatening diseases. COH is a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and one of the most advanced medical and research facilities in the world. It has historically combined significant philanthropy with world-class medical and scientific achievement. This work is carried out by two separate, but integrated, organizations (City of Hope National Medical Center and the Beckman Research Institute) and supported by a network of volunteer fundraisers and donors coordinated through 9 regional offices located in 6 states across the country. In fiscal year 2006, total combined revenues for City of Hope National Medical Center, Beckman Research Institute, and the Development Group were $641 million with operating income of $116 million. City of Hope encompasses more than 114 acres and includes 138 physicians and 500 scientists, along with nearly 3,500 employees.
City of Hope is experiencing tremendous growth in all facets of its operations. In 2005, the City of Hope National Medical Center opened a new 144-bed, 340,000 square foot state-of-the-art hospital which is supported by a 95,000-square foot Ambulatory Care Center. Peer-reviewed funding has tripled since the mid-90's. City of Hope is ranked 13th of more than 2,500 institutions receiving grant support from the National Institute of Health. From its inception, City of Hope has had a legacy of philanthropy that has grown into a vast worldwide network of over 290,000 volunteers and donors who support its work. The combined efforts of the Development Group and the extensive network of support groups have resulted in a steady increase in total contributions to $122.5 million in fiscal year 2006.
The Vice President for Human Resources serves as the Chief Human Resources Officer for three corporations: Helford Clinical Research Hospital (Medical Center), the Beckman Research Institution (BRI) and the Development Group. As a member of the executive team, the Vice President for Human Resources serves as a partner to senior leadership in aligning human resources programs with the strategic initiatives of City of Hope and in supporting and ensuring organizational effectiveness. The incumbent is responsible for defining, developing and implementing a strategic human resource plan that is pro-active, cost effective and internally service oriented and responsible to the organization.
The desired candidate will be a seasoned human resources executive with a minimum of ten years of management experience in a well respected academic medical center or other large, complex teaching hospital/healthcare system. However, prior experience in healthcare is not a requirement. Previous labor relations experience is required. An undergraduate degree is required and a Master's degree in Business Administration, Human Resources Administration, Organization Development, or Healthcare Management is strongly preferred.
City of Hope is located in Duarte, a small progressive suburban community located in the San Gabriel Valley at the base of the picturesque San Gabriel Mountains, approximately 21 miles northeast of Los Angeles and 10 miles from Pasadena.
