Mercy Health Partners-Northeast Region (MHP), a regional health care delivery system composed of Mercy Hospital Scranton (MHS) - a 282-bed full-service, tertiary hospital with teaching programs; Mercy Special Care Hospital, Nanticoke, Pennsylvania; Mercy Skilled Nursing Unit; Mercy Home Health; and other regional health services, has retained Witt/Kieffer to assist in the search for a President and Chief Executive Officer. MHP has a value-driven philosophy based on a long-standing tradition of care, with the Mission of extending the healing ministry of Jesus to the communities served, with emphasis on the poor and underserved. MHP is one of nine regions in the $4.3 billion Catholic Healthcare Partners (CHP) system, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Located in Scranton, Pennsylvania, MHP is the only Catholic system in a two-county area which has a population of 500,000, of whom nearly 75 percent are Catholic; and its hospital and other entities are well recognized for their dedication to mission and quality of care. MHS was named to Solucient's 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals List in 2005 and 2006, and is recognized as a regional cancer center by the National Cancer Institute and American College of Surgeons. MHS has teaching programs and is affiliated with Temple University School of Medicine, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Additionally, the creation of a new, independent, allopathic medical school, Medical College of Northeastern Pennsylvania in Scranton is under way and will take in its first class in 2009. The new dean, Dr. Robert D'Alessandri was appointed in June 2007. The new CEO will participate with other healthcare leaders in the region in the medical school's development.
The new President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will provide values-based leadership to MHP, working closely with the hospital board, medical staff, community and civic leaders. Along with the board, the successful candidate will set the strategic direction for MHP and lead a high performing senior management team. With the focus of assuring the continuation of the Health Care Ministry in accordance with the Strategic Plan of CHP, the new CEO will develop and implement an aggressive strategy to optimize MHP's resources, so to be responsive to the community's current and future needs and demands, particularly given the competitive environment of the MHP Service Area. The new CEO will promote a culture of continuous quality improvement and the elevation of service standards through the implementation of best practices, and will continue to improve the financial performance of MHP.
The successful candidate will have a highly visible and outgoing style, a track record of creating a positive work environment, and will be collaborative, flexible and adaptable, while providing strong leadership. Candidates must have a personal values system that is consistent with the mission, vision and values of CHP. Catholic hospital experience is a plus, but not a requirement; however, the new CEO must practice and promote spirituality in the workplace. A track record of success at the CEO/COO level in a growing and competitive market is necessary. Experience and a high degree of comfort working within a system environment is critical. A master's degree in business administration, healthcare administration or related field is required.
