Job Description
Community Medical Center
Vice President, Medical Affairs
Missoula, MT
An attractive opportunity has presented itself for the aspiring hospital-based physician executive. Community Medical Center (CMC) of Missoula, MT is seeking a Vice President, Medical Affairs (VPMA) to succeed to what is now a full-time dedicated management position, formerly held by practicing physicians on a part-time basis. It is hoped that the qualified candidate would join the senior management team not only as a contributing team member, also with an interest in organizational succession planning. Your confidential recommendation of a colleague who is interested/qualified is welcome.
CMC includes a 146-bed facility on 45 acres, a campus which also includes physician offices, an inpatient regional referral comprehensive medical rehabilitation unit, an outpatient surgery center, and a walk-in care facility (there is a second walk-in care facility at another site). Leading programs include: the only Missoula women's and children's services, with 1700 deliveries (a new facility is in planning stages), high-risk OB, a regional referral NICU Level III; the only PICU in Montana; expanding oncology services; and the regional referral rehabilitation program, providing care for brain and spinal cord injury, as well as stroke and orthopedic rehab. CMC's cath lab performs half the cardiac catheterizations in the community as well as primary angioplasty. CMC also sponsors a 42-physician mostly primary care network of physicians. Work is currently underway relating to an IT/EMR initiative. Missoula offers a highly attractive outdoor-oriented lifestyle, with any and all expected high-altitude activities along with premier climate.
The VPMA role includes the traditional medical staff affairs and office, as well as quality and patient safety, along with oversight of designated medical directors of various programs. The part-time role has not allowed the VPMA in the past to integrate fully into the senior management team. It is anticipated that the VPMA responsibilities will expand to include programmatic oversight in selected instances, and preferably strategic areas of operational responsibility. CMC's strategic direction at present is to expand programs and services, which will necessitate careful planning relating to physician leadership and alignment. The VPMA will be pivotal in these discussions.
Candidates ideally will be credible clinicians, with experience in management and administration in the hospital environment. He/she should have additional management coursework, along with broad knowledge of quality infrastructure, finance, IT, and operations, with a high premium put on actual operational skills. Effective interpersonal and relationship skills will be required. A limited practice commitment is possible, though anticipated a challenge.
