Job Description

American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
Senior Vice President, Professional and Scientific Affairs
Evanston, IL

Witt/Kieffer has been engaged to assist the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in recruiting a Senior Vice President - Professional and Scientific Affairs (SVP-PSA). This not-for-profit organization establishes standards for physician specialty certification and physician performance assessment. ABMS communicates information about these standards to support the public's quest for safe, high-quality healthcare, and assists its Member Boards in developing and implementing educational and professional standards to evaluate and certify physician specialists.

As a senior member of the executive team, the SVP-PSA will report directly to the President and CEO, Kevin Weiss, MD, MPH. The role of the SVP-PSA is that of the primary leader within ABMS concerning all scientific policies, programs, and committee work related to the process of certification and recertification. This person will provide strategy and leadership regarding certification standards, maintenance of certification (MOC) processes, and the development of products and resources for the Member Boards to facilitate effective certification to support quality patient care. In this role, the SVP -PSA will act as the liaison between ABMS and the Member Boards, and will staff key committees of the ABMS Board of Directors relative to certification, recertification, and evaluation. The SVP-PSA will also provide strategy and leadership for ABMS regarding its health services research agenda, articulating the research issues that support the public trust mission of ABMS, and providing oversight to the grant-funded research programs that are awarded to ABMS and its subcontractors.

Candidates must have an advanced clinical degree and be Board certified, with at least 7 to 10 years of experience in program evaluation and/or improvement of healthcare quality. The ideal candidate will have the rank of at least associate professor, is well connected in national professional societies and healthcare quality organizations, and has had demonstrable success with independent research efforts, attracting of grant support, and publishing articles in high-level, peer-reviewed journals.
