The American University of Beirut (AUB) seeks a Vice President for Medical Affairs/Dean of the Faculty of Medicine to lead the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC). The university has engaged Witt/Kieffer to assist in this search and we would appreciate your assistance in nominating individuals for this uniquely important position. It is anticipated that this appointment would be effective July 1, 2009.

The Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean (VP/Dean) of the Faculty of Medicine is the chief administrative officer of the AUBMC and chief administrative and academic leader of the Faculty of Medicine. S/he is responsible to the President and to the Board of Trustees for the vision, strategic direction, coordination and administration of the overall educational, research and patient care programs of the AUBMC and its offsite programs and affiliates.

AUBMC is a private, not-for-profit teaching center of the Faculty of Medicine. It consists of a 420-bed medical center, accredited by the Joint Commission International, that provides all medical, surgical, pediatric, obstetrical/gynecological and psychiatric services as well as ambulatory care. The Medical Center offers comprehensive healthcare services, extensive tertiary/quaternary resources, medical, nursing and paramedical training. The Faculty of Medicine, including the School of Nursing, has 249 faculty members. The clinical faculty serves as the medical staff for AUBMC. There are 316 medical students, 42 masters level graduate students, 233 residents and 37 fellows. In 2002, the faculty implemented a Medical Practice Plan. Research activity occurs at the basic science, translational and clinical levels.

Reporting to the Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine are: Associate and Assistant Deans; Department Chairs; Director of the School of Nursing; Director of the Medical Center; Chief of Staff; Chief Financial Officer; Chief Information Officer (CIO); Director of University Health Services; Medical Librarian; Director of Projects; Coordinator of External Programs and the Associate Director of Development (Medicine).

The successful candidate will preferably have an MD degree, although a PhD in a basic science discipline would be considered if the candidate's experience meets the other criteria. The candidate must also have had specific experience in leadership and management positions at an academic medical center of the caliber and complexity of AUBMC. The successful candidate will have a record of academic scholarship, clinical excellence and research productivity sufficient to be eligible for appointment as a full professor.
