Medical Director, John George Psychiatric Pavilion/Chair, Department of Psychiatry.
Oakland, CA

As you may be aware, Witt/Kieffer is a leading executive search firm serving the healthcare, industry. We have been retained by Alameda County Medical Center (ACMC), located in Oakland, California in their search for a new Medical Director, John George Psychiatric Pavilion/Chair, Department of Psychiatry.

Alameda County Medical Center is a model, comprehensive and integrated public health system of hospitals and clinics that serve the residents of the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay. With six campuses located throughout Alameda County, it has a $485 million annual operating budget with 2,800 employees.

The Department of Psychiatry at ACMC offers a wide range of innovative inpatient, outpatient and emergency services designed to meet the behavioral health needs of people of all ages in Alameda County. The main campus and focus for inpatient and acute psychiatric emergency care is John George Psychiatric Pavilion (JGPP), a state of the art 69-bed free standing psychiatric hospital. At JGPP, the Psychiatry Department provides 99% of all adult psychiatric emergency services for Alameda County and offers inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services, 24-hour psychiatric emergency and crisis stabilization unit, and substance abuse and prenatal substance abuse treatment services. JGPP provides more than 35% of the acute psychiatric care in the County with 2,631 admissions and 24,417 patient days in FY 2008. In addition, at Highland General Hospital and Fairmont Hospital, the Psychiatry Department provides consultation and liaison services to the inpatient service and Emergency Department, including 5150 (psychiatric hold) clearance, prenatal substance abuse, drug day treatment and case management services, outpatient drug treatment services, and psychiatric partial hospitalization programs.

Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer of Alameda County Medical Center, the ideal candidate for this position will be an outstanding clinician and proven administrative leader in psychiatry with excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative, consensus building, yet decisive management style. Prior successful management experience as a Medical Director or Associate Medical Director in a well regarded institution is highly desirable. Experience directing medical students, residency and postgraduate psychiatry training programs are also a plus. He/she will have a strong commitment to the mission of a safety net provider and the strategic vision and political astuteness to provide leadership in delivering high quality behavior health services.
