Maine Medical Center (MMC), one of New England’s premier teaching and community healthcare delivery organizations, has retained Witt/Kieffer to assist in the recruitment of a new Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer. MMC has rich history of innovation as well as an exceptional commitment to quality and safety. A Top 100 hospital, MMC has consistently enjoyed national recognition by U.S. News and World Report, the Leap Frog Group and Solucient. It has also achieved Magnet designation for its excellent patient care.

The Medical Center, the flagship for MaineHealth, is the largest healthcare provider in northern New England and draws from the entire state as well as parts of New Hampshire. It includes a 606 bed tertiary hospital, numerous outpatient facilities, a growing physician organization and a significant research endeavor, Maine Medical Center Research Institute. MMC currently trains over 230 residents and fellows, and has taken a significant step in furthering its academic mission by establishing a unique medical school program in partnership with Tufts University School of Medicine. Each class of 36 students in the “Maine track” will receive a combined diploma from MMC and Tufts. The first class entered Fall 2009.

We seek an operationally and strategically astute executive who can provide leadership that will result in strong operational performance, exceptional teamwork, quality care as well as growth in programs and market share. Reporting directly to CEO, Rich Petersen, the EVP/COO will focus on service and operational excellence, program growth, quality, and culture enhancement and physician relationships. The EVP/COO for MMC will oversee all of the operations of the hospital and will serve as a key strategic advisor to the CEO, other senior executives and physician leaders.

Candidates should have a track record of improving hospital operations in a competitive environment and building effective teams and partnering with physicians in the development of clinical programs. The successful candidate will have strong strategic skills, a strong customer service orientation, and the ability to lead and manage organizational change. He/She must possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and strong conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to identify issues and opportunities and be able to solve problems. Candidates must have a strong background in hospital operations including finance, with at least ten years experience.
