Cooper Medical School of Rowan University invites nominations and applications for the position of Founding Dean for the first four-year allopathic medical school in Southern New Jersey. The medical school is a partnership between Cooper University Hospital, Camden, New Jersey, and Rowan University, Glassboro, New Jersey. For the last 30 years, Cooper University Hospital has provided clinical training to third and fourth year medical students from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, which makes it well positioned for success as a four-year medical school. Cooper University Hospital is a leading healthcare system in the Delaware Valley with 400 full-time, salaried clinical faculty, in over 75 specialties. Rowan University, a selective, public university located in Glassboro, New Jersey, is renowned for its science and technology facilities and programs. The new medical school will significantly expand graduate programs at Rowan University. Existing programs will dovetail with a medical school curriculum and provide for future expansion of science, technology and allied health degrees. The medical school will be a catalyst for the further development of the city of Camden.
The Founding Dean will direct the establishment of the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University - build consensus, relationships and programs; build a faculty and staff; organize and direct the process leading to accreditation of the new school; oversee the completion of the new medical school building on the Cooper campus; and expand and solidify the Cooper and Rowan relationship in this pivotal venture. The successful candidate will provide academic and administrative leadership for the medical school. The Founding Dean's primary responsibilities include academic oversight of the programs, curricular development, management of the school's finances, development and implementation of strategies to promote research, leadership for strategic planning within the school and private philanthropy. An M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree is required. Candidates are required to have a distinguished record of effective and collaborative leadership in medical education and the health sciences, a record of scholarly accomplishments, and strong interpersonal and communication skills.
