Job Description

Niswonger Children's Hospital
Chief Executive Officer
Johnson City, TN

Mountain States Health Alliance (MSHA) based in Johnson City, Tennessee has retained Witt/Kieffer to assist in the recruitment efforts for a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Niswonger Children's Hospital. Niswonger Children's Hospital, opened in 2009, is the only facility between Knoxville and Roanoke that is a member of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI), currently serving more than 200,000 children in a four-state, 29-county region. It is the replacement facility for The Children's Hospital at Johnson City Medical Center, which has been the regional leader in pediatric services since 1992. Niswonger Children's Hospital works in partnership with the East Tennessee State University College of Medicine and has more than 20 pediatric subspecialties and 127 physicians on staff. It is one of six national affiliates of the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Niswonger Children's Hospital offers transport services dedicated to the transfer of critically ill infants and children from referral hospitals.

The CEO of Niswonger Children's Hospital reports to MSHA's Senior Vice President for Tennessee Operations, Candace Jennings, with a matrix reporting relationship to the Senior Vice President for Virginia Operations for pediatric services delivered in the MSHA Virginia Hospitals. There is also a matrix relationship to the Chief Medical Officers for Tennessee and Virginia for pediatric services delivered in all MSHA hospitals. The CEO is responsible for assuring a collaborative partnership with various academic, medical practices and corporate programs in MSHA in ways that demonstrate support for the System's mission and vision. The CEO will develop and promote highly visible programs to the public that will serve to reinforce the uniqueness of the Niswonger Children's Hospital to the region. In addition, the CEO will work closely with the Mountain States Foundation in support of fund raising efforts for the facility. The selected candidate will be in a unique position to join this premier organization at the most dynamic and innovative time in its history. This person will be a part of a cadre of enthusiastic leaders that have wholeheartedly embraced change management, technology/innovation and cultural transformation as they seek to become the hallmark for outstanding patient care.

The successful candidate will have a graduate degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration, Public Administration or equivalent experience from a nationally-recognized, accredited program. The CEO will have an outstanding record of achievement with at least ten (10) years of progressive senior healthcare leadership experience in an acute care setting preferably in a similar sized healthcare system that is highly matrixed with respect to its management structure.
