Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) and the Friends of St. John's Hospitals (Friends) have retained Witt/Kieffer to assist in identifying a dynamic, seasoned development professional to serve as Chief Development Officer (CDO) of the Friends of St. John's Hospital, a division of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, located in Springfield, Illinois. The successful candidate will elevate the current level and kind of giving and create a high functioning, sophisticated development program.
A healing ministry of the Roman Catholic Church, HSHS is a highly integrated, multi-institutional health care system of 13 hospitals and numerous physician practices throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. HSHS is a $1.6 billion, AA rated system composed of 15,720 colleagues - Illinois: 9,450; Wisconsin: 6,270. HSHS hospitals range in size from a 25-bed critical access hospital to a 733-licensed bed regional referral center.
In FY09, the Friends raised approximately $1.7 million. The HSHS Foundation, which administers the system's development funds, has assets of $90 million and raised through its 13 hospitals $12 million last year. HSHS and the Friends seek a greater strategic emphasis on the development of a strong, contemporary, integrated philanthropic program.
The successful candidate will report to Robert P. Ritz, President and CEO, of St. John's Hospital, with 539 licensed beds, 465-staffed beds, over 600 physicians and with Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, helps educate more than 300 medical students, 116 residents and four fellows each year. St. John's and affiliated entities has net operating revenues of $435,775,000. The CDO will lead the philanthropic effort and create a culture of philanthropy and craft a compelling message for giving both within the organization and from external donors. The CDO will be responsible for creating, leading and managing all aspects of the Friends including identifying current and future fundraising priorities, executing and developing philanthropic strategies to meet the goals of the organization.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelors Degree in finance, business management, healthcare management, marketing, public relations or closely related field with Master's prepared candidates preferred; significant philanthropic and fund development work experience with a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible positions in a leadership capacity at the CDO or equivalent level with a highly successful track record in the full range of fund development activities. Experience in healthcare philanthropy is strongly preferred; Catholic healthcare experience is a plus.
