Job Description

The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson invites inquiries, nominations and expressions of interest for the role of Chair, Department of Anesthesiology. This is a terrific opportunity to lead a well-established department and develop a cutting-edge model of care and research in partnership with the nation’s leading health system for accountable care.

The Department of Anesthesiology is currently comprised of 33 clinical faculty, 7 research faculty, 41 residents, 2 fellows and 21 CRNAs covering 31 operating rooms across two hospitals including Banner University Medical Center Tucson and Banner - University Medical Center South. The clinical service covers ambulatory, cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, obstetric, pediatric, trauma, transplantation and vascular surgery, as well as acute and chronic pain and critical care. Research programs span basic and clinical research with funding from the NIH and private industry. In January 2019, a new hospital facility will open at Banner University Medical Center-Tucson. The new Chair will have the opportunity to recruit new faculty, play a key role in the successful opening of new facilities, and reinvigorate scholarship for the Department.

The UA College of Medicine is part of the University of Arizona Health Sciences, the statewide leader in biomedical research and health professions training, with over 1,000 faculty and $126 million in annual research grants and contracts. The UA Health Sciences includes the UA Colleges of Medicine (Phoenix and Tucson), Nursing, Pharmacy and the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, with main campus locations in Tucson and the growing Phoenix Biomedical Campus in downtown Phoenix. In February 2015, Banner Health merged with the University of Arizona Health Network in Tucson, Arizona, to form Banner – University Medicine. At the heart of this merger is academic medicine – research, teaching and patient care – across three academic medical centers in Tucson and Phoenix.

The successful candidate will be an academic anesthesiologist with a national reputation and a substantial record of research, teaching, clinical, and administrative accomplishments. He or she will have the knowledge and ability to effectively lead physicians and other health professionals, researchers, and educators while embracing the values of quality and financial sustainability. Candidates must have the leadership experience required to oversee a busy clinical department.  Integrity, intellect, the ability to work collaboratively with numerous stakeholders, and a vision of how a modern academic department of anesthesiology thrives in an age of health reform are essential.

Qualified candidates must hold an MD or equivalent medical degree; be board certified in Anesthesiology and eligible for medical licensure in Arizona; and meet University of Arizona criteria for appointment to a tenured senior level faculty position. Proven and substantial leadership experience is required, as is the ability to be a collaborative leader in a rapidly evolving model of care.
