Alta Bates Summit Medical Center - Alta Bates Campus - Chief Executive Officer

Berkeley, CA

Job Description

Witt/Kieffer has been engaged to conduct a national search for the Chief Executive Officer of Sutter Health’s San Francisco East Bay flagship hospital, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center (ABSMC) which has approximately 700 beds, $1.1 billion net patient revenues, and over 3,700 FTEs. ABSMC has grown to a multi-site healthcare enterprise comprised of the Summit campus, a major growth-oriented, acute care hospital based in Oakland; Alta Bates campus, a complex acute care hospital known for women’s services located in Berkeley; and the Herrick campus which provides behavioral health, comprehensive cancer care, and other outpatient services also located in Berkeley.

This is an outstanding opportunity for the new Chief Executive Officer to continue to grow and strengthen this high-quality organization. The CEO’s main focus will be to enhance operations and physician relationships, grow market share, and improve financial performance with high clinical quality outcomes. Due to California State seismic regulations, the Alta Bates campus will be ineligible for inpatient hospital and emergency care by the year 2030. The executive will bring leadership to successfully transition and integrate services, physicians and staff from the historic Alta Bates campus to the growing Summit campus in Oakland.

We are seeking candidates who have CEO experience in large, high performing tertiary hospitals in competitive markets with a track record of success in physician alignment as well as financial, operational, and quality metrics. The executive also will have a strong background working effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders including community members/organizations, unions, government and elected officials. Turnaround and multisite experience would be helpful.

It has 24 hospitals, 4,311 licensed acute care beds, 5,500 physicians, and 53,000 employees and provides personalized care in more than 100 Northern California communities.
