Tufts Medical Center - Chief Executive Officer

Boston, MA

Job Description

Tufts Medical Center (Tufts MC) has retained Witt/Kieffer to support their efforts to recruit a progressive and experienced leader for its next Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This is a truly unique opportunity for an experienced and passionate executive to guide one of the most respected academic medical centers in the United States.

Tufts Medical Center is a 415-bed internationally renowned academic medical center, known for both cutting-edge treatment and compassionate healthcare. This is a full-service hospital with the highest acuity in Boston, caring for all patients from the tiniest newborns at the Floating Hospital for Children to centenarians in our geriatrics program.  It provides everything from routine and emergency care to the Chinatown community to treating complex diseases and injuries impacting adults and children across New England.

The next chief executive will embrace the organization’s tenacity, its compassionate and close-knit culture, as well as its mission to put “patients and their families . . . at the center of everything we do.” On the CEO’s agenda will be the championing of service excellence, care quality, patient safety and experience, product line innovation, and financial growth.

The CEO will fill the position currently held by Michael Wagner, MD, FACHE, as Dr. Wagner assumes the role of Chief Physician Executive for the Wellforce health system, of which Tufts Medical Center is a founding member and sole tertiary academic medical facility. Working in concert with the Board of Trustees and the Wellforce CEO and executive team, the next CEO of Tufts Medical Center will carry on a distinguished legacy while embracing the culture, mission and service excellence that have always distinguished Tufts Medical Center from its peers. This leader will have the day-to-day responsibility for the organization’s clinical, teaching and research performance. As a key leader in the Wellforce system, he/she will be expected to shape system-wide strategy, goals and clinical program development, in collaboration with Wellforce colleagues.

The organization seeks an individual with vision, authenticity, courage and conviction who will inspire clinicians and staff and significantly impact the health and care of patients and families locally and across the industry. He/she will have an understanding of managing hospital operations within a multi-hospital system, be comfortable in a matrixed environment, have significant leadership experience in an academic medical center within a competitive market and have demonstrated successful relationships with medical school leadership and academic medical staff.

Inquiries, nominations and applications are invited and may be submitted confidentially to Kimberly A. Smith, FACHE, Julie A. Rosen, and Stephen C. Davis via email to sdavis@wittkieffer.com. Inquiries may be addressed to Kimberly Smith, Julie Rosen or Stephen Davis, the Witt/Kieffer consultants supporting this search at 781-272-8899.
