Butler Health System has retained Witt/Kieffer to assist in the search for their next Chief Operating Officer. This COO will be an integral part of the health system senior leadership team, serving as the system executive responsible for leading overall operational excellence of the health system. 

As a successful and independent health system located just a short drive from Pittsburgh in Butler, Pennsylvania, Butler Health System has been successful in achieving their goal of developing collaborative relationships in the region. Butler Health System is a $330 million organization, with a consistently positive operating margin and a strong balance sheet. The system is comprised of the 338-bed Butler Memorial Hospital and an employed medical group of approximately 180 providers know as Butler Medical Providers.  Strategies such as identifying growth opportunities through physician partnerships, joint ventures arrangements with external organizations and the optimization of the accountable care organization known as Bridges Health Partners has allowed the system to help ensure future success and maintain independence. 

The next COO will lead operational initiatives across the entire health system.  She/he will need to be comfortable working in a team based environment, where visibility and collaboration is paramount to the individual and overall organizational success.  The COO is responsible for both inpatient and outpatient operations while ensuring alignment with the long term strategy of Butler Health System.  They will balance strategy and operations, leading service line growth and development in cardiology, oncology and orthopedics while also helping to drive initiatives to improve patient access, flow and throughput.  Stylistically, the COO needs to be one that will engender confidence in their ability to affect change and enhance operations.  It will be important for this COO to quickly gain credibility with her/his team, gain an understanding of the market dynamics in Western Pennsylvania, and help to identify future growth opportunities.      

The successful candidate should be an engaging and approachable leader, with a track record of aligning strategy with operations.  Experience in a senior operations leadership role is critical, preferably within a hospital and/or health system setting.
