University of Tennessee Health Science Center - Executive Dean, College of Medicine

Memphis, TN

Job Description

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine invites applications, inquiries, and nominations for its next Executive Dean.

It is an exciting time for UTHSC as the main Memphis campus is in the middle of more than $350 million in renovation and construction, including a newly constructed Translational Science Research Building and a dedicated Multi-Disciplinary Simulation Building.  The main UTHSC campus is located in Memphis and includes six colleges: Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy.  The Health Science Center is part of the statewide, multi-campus University of Tennessee system, and has multiple clinical partners across the state.  UTHSC has launched an aggressive campaign to double extramural research funding over the next ten years.

With more than 16,000 alumni, the College of Medicine is the largest medical school in Tennessee and offers programs leading to the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree.  The College of Medicine is made up of four fully integrated locations in Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville.  Medical Students from the College of Medicine spend their first two years on the Memphis campus and then rotate on all four campuses for clinical training.  GME programs and active research and clinical practice programs are present on all four College of Medicine campuses.  Responsibility for leadership of the Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville campuses is delegated by the Executive Dean to the three respective campus deans.  Currently, the College has approximately 656 medical students and over 1,200 residents and fellows in 90 GME training programs.  Gross revenues for the College exceed $400 million annually with greater than $70 million in research revenues.  Multiple physician practice groups make up the College of Medicine faculty practice arm with the largest number of faculty being members of University Clinical Health (UCH).

Reporting to the Chancellor, Dr. Steve Schwab, the Executive Dean is charged with advancing the academic and research missions of the College, and is a vital partner in framing the strategic direction for the clinical enterprise.  The successful candidate will be an outstanding, nationally recognized leader with a substantial record of research, teaching, clinical, and administrative accomplishments in academic medicine.  He or she will have the in-depth knowledge and ability to effectively lead physicians, researchers, and educators while embracing the importance of quality and financial sustainability.  Integrity, intellect, the ability to work effectively with numerous stakeholders, and a vision of how medicine will thrive clinically, scientifically, and financially in an age of health reform are essential.  Qualified candidates must hold an MD or equivalent medical degree; be board certified in their specialty and eligible for medical licensure in Tennessee; and meet University of Tennessee criteria for appointment to a tenured senior level faculty position.  Candidates should seek to actively engage with the community and serve the state of Tennessee.

Nominations, expressions of interest and applications (including a cover letter and resume) can be sent in confidence to the University of Tennessee’s executive search consultants, Jeff Schroetlin, Dr. Tony Barbato, and Megan Welch with Witt/Kieffer at; phone 630.575.6904.
