Job Description

The Chancellor and the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia seek an exceptional, vibrant, and visible leader with creativity, energy, and vision to serve as President of Georgia Southwestern State University.

Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) is a public institution of higher education and is part of the 28-institution University System of Georgia. Founded in 1906 and ranked as one of the best value small colleges in the nation, the University has around 3,000 residential, commuter and online students. Students on campus in Americus, Georgia hail from 25 states and 30 nations, but the majority are residents of Georgia and the region. 

The University’s 20-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio allows faculty to provide individual attention to students and access to faculty consistently is mentioned as one of Georgia Southwestern’s greatest strengths. GSW borders two National Historic Sites: The Jimmy Carter National Historic Site in Plains and the Andersonville National Historic Site, both part of the National Park Service. Also, Americus is the founding location for Habitat for Humanity and the international headquarters for the Fuller Center for Housing. GSW also is home to the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving. GSW offers students unique opportunities for community and service learning, in addition to more than 30 majors and special programs of study.

GSW’s next President will need to lead with an inclusive vision, energy, and compassion. She or he will learn from the perspectives of others and develop plans that build on collective strengths and commitments to inspire a sense of shared mission. He or she will be entrepreneurial and creative by developing new revenue streams to advance the University’s mission and enabling GSW to seize new and promising opportunities. The next President will further build the institution’s reputation and resources to take it to even higher levels of academic quality and student success.

GSW’s qualified and committed faculty and staff are proud of the University’s accomplishments and its long record of providing students with outstanding academic and life experiences. The new President will be passionate about higher education, its mission, and the important social and economic roles that the University plays in Americus and the region. The ability to articulate and celebrate GSW’s value will serve the President well as an advocate for the University on its campus, in the region, and statewide; and as a fundraiser with the University’s many and broadly based constituents.
