Job Description

Ramapo College of New Jersey invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs (Provost/VPAA). 

The Provost/VPAA is the chief academic officer, reports directly to the President, and serves on the President’s Senior Cabinet. As such, the provost/VPAA participates in all aspects of institution-wide planning, program and policy review; provides strategic vision and operational leadership to all aspects of the academic programs; and encourages opportunities for distinctive programmatic synergy in support of the liberal arts mission of the College.  The provost/VPAA works collaboratively with the president, the vice presidents, the deans, faculty and various councils and committees to carry out the mission of the College.

Established in 1969, Ramapo College of New Jersey, located in Mahwah Township in the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains on the New Jersey/New York border is the state’s premier public liberal arts college dedicated to providing students a strong foundation for a lifetime of achievement and committed to academic excellence through interdisciplinary and experiential learning, and international and intercultural understanding. Organized into five interdisciplinary schools offering more than 40 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, Ramapo College offers bachelor degrees in the arts, business, the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences, as well as in professional studies such as nursing, social work and teacher education.  Ramapo College emphasizes teaching and individual attention to all students and promotes diversity, inclusiveness, sustainability, student engagement, and community involvement.

The successful candidate will have a distinguished record in teaching, scholarship, and administrative leadership as well as a deep understanding of the transformative power of a liberal arts education. The new provost/VPAA will be an academic leader of vision and energy, have an inclusive and empowering leadership style and demonstrate a strong commitment to the growth and diversity of both faculty and students. They will demonstrate support for the four “pillars” of education: international, intercultural, interdisciplinary and experiential; will foster research, creativity and interdisciplinary collaborations across campus; and possess the collegial, collaborative and transparent values necessary to lead within a strong shared-governance academic environment.  The provost/VPAA should have strong communication skills, including the ability to use diplomacy, inclusion and consensus to inform the decision-making process. An earned doctorate or an appropriate terminal degree and the qualifications to hold the rank of professor is required.  A complete leadership profile is available below.
