Job Description

Georgia College & State University (GC) invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President for Student Affairs. The Vice President reports directly to the President of the University, Dr. Steve Dorman.  The vacancy is occasioned by the retirement of Dr. Bruce Harshbarger, who has served Georgia College with distinction as the Vice President for Student Affairs for 23 years.  More information about GC may be found at www.gcsu.edu.

The Vice President for Students Affairs is a member of the President's Executive Cabinet. He/she is responsible for the planning, direction and evaluation of all of GCSU's student affairs programs and administrators including the Dean of Students, Director of Student Disability Resources, Director of Career Services, Director of Athletics, Executive Director of University Housing, and Director of Counseling Services.  Units and functions supervised include Intercollegiate Athletics, Career Center, Campus Life and Activities, Student Government, Fraternities and Sororities, Counseling Services, Disability Services, Judicial Affairs, Cultural Center, Women’s Center, Intramurals and Recreation, Wellness and Recreation Center, Outdoor Center, and University Housing. The Vice President will work across the institution to create and maintain a climate that fosters student learning, engagement, and development while enhancing a strong sense of community. In an active partnership with the other senior administrators including the academic deans, the Vice President is accountable for upholding and strengthening the University's high student retention and graduation rates, the culture of student achievement, and a robust commitment to the career readiness of the College’s liberal arts graduates.

The successful candidate will have an advanced degree, preferably in higher education administration or student personnel, with a doctorate preferred; at least 10 years of progressively responsible and relevant experience, including five or more years of supervisory experience; demonstrated commitment to collaborative teamwork and strategic leadership; the ability to work with faculty and academic administrative colleagues; a track record of successfully working with college students and student organizations; commitment to developing a robust ethnically and culturally diverse environment; a deep understanding of contemporary student life issues and a particular appreciation for the opportunities offered by the residential liberal arts college experience.  The next Vice President will have experience with assessment and a commitment to data-informed decision making in the management of the student affairs operation.
