The University of Washington Bothell (UW Bothell) seeks an engaging, inspiring, collaborative leader to serve as its next chancellor starting in Fall 2021, following the retirement of the current chancellor, Dr. Bjong Wolf Yeigh. 

Located in the heart of the Puget Sound region, the UW Bothell is one of the most dynamic public universities in the state of Washington. The campus is also part of the region’s “tech corridor,” where many international and startup technology and biomedical companies are located. In concert with the other campuses of the University of Washington, UW Bothell is committed to increasing access to an excellent UW education and preparing a diverse student body for leadership throughout Washington and the world. 

UW Bothell is a community of 5,664 undergraduate students, 662 graduate students, 354 faculty, and 358 staff that are organized into five academic schools: School of Business, School of Educational Studies, School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, School of Nursing & Health Studies and School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) plus a First Year and Pre-Major Program. The University is co-located with Cascadia College on a shared campus of 128 acres, land formerly part of the Boone-Truly Ranch and situated on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish people. In January 2020, the campus earned a Carnegie Foundation designation for its deep commitment to and investments in community engagement. Each year, UW Bothell students work with more than 375 community partners — businesses, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies — on projects that advance their education and support the partners’ goals. 

Renowned for its deep engagement with students and the communities from which they come, UW Bothell educates one of the state’s most ethnically diverse student bodies, a high percentage of which are the first in their families to attend college. Bothell’s impressive success as a force for social mobility is evident in a few remarkable facts: An exceptionally high percentage of Bothell students graduate debt-free, earn higher salaries than their peers, and enjoy the highest “return on investment” of any public college in the nation (as noted in UW BOTHELL’s Points of Pride). As one UW Bothell student succinctly put it, the future aspirations of the UW Bothell campus include leading the country in “…creating the next generation of business people, engineers, educators, and others who put diversity and equity first.” 

The chancellor reports to the UW President and UW Provost with the support of Vice Chancellors, campus councils and committees, and the UW Bothell Advisory Board. The chancellor is responsible for all academic and operational matters at UW Bothell. This person will provide the leadership needed to advance a shared vision for the campus and promote its teaching, research, and service missions. In particular, the next chancellor will lead UW Bothell in pursuing the collective aspirations articulated in its 2020 strategic plan, help prepare for the “new normal” in a post-pandemic world, strengthen and extend key relationships, generate financial support, and lead the campus community in crafting the distinct identity of the Bothell campus as part of a multi-campus university.

A successful candidate for the position will hold an advanced terminal degree. This person will have a minimum of five years of progressive executive experience in higher education. In some instances, the search committee will consider high-level experience in other sectors, although the next chancellor must be familiar with the university environment. The next chancellor will have a strong history of leadership and personnel management, operations, and finances. A record of success in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and the ability to promote ongoing efforts in visioning, planning and fundraising will all be essential elements to the next chancellor’s success.
