Texas State University - Associate Vice President for Research and Federal Relations

Texas State University invites nominations and applications in its search for the institution’s next associate vice president for research and federal relations. This individual serves as the institution’s chief research officer (CRO) and will provide vision and leadership in support of progression toward National Research University Funding eligibility and R1 designation.

The CRO leads the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, which manages a wide variety of operations related to the university’s research enterprise, including research and development, industry engagement, financial conflicts of interest, export control, management of intellectual property, commercialization of university intellectual property, pre- and post-award management, oversight of compliance related to human subjects and animals used for research purposes, and interaction with members of the U.S. Congress and their staff. In addition, the directors of the seven university-level research centers and the executive director of the Science, Technology, and Advanced Research (STAR) Park report to the CRO. Approximately 100 staff located in various university support areas and centers report directly or indirectly through directors to the CRO.

World-class research and scholarly activities at Texas State University spans all disciplines and serve to create new knowledge and promote economic, cultural and technological advancement to address real-world issues. Based on FY19 levels, Texas State is in the top 20% nationally in total R&D, and top 10% for non-science and engineering R&D expenditures. Even though Texas State does not have a medical school, the university has an expanding portfolio of funding from Health and Human Services (HHS) sponsors, including the National Institutes of Health, and is in the top-half of universities nationally in HHS expenditures. In FY20 total research and development expenditures at Texas State reached an all-time high of $70.7 million. Texas State is a Carnegie classified research university at the R2 level, and seeks to continue building a nationally and internationally recognized research enterprise offering a broad range of quality programs that contribute to a better and more sustainable future for Texas and the nation.
