University of Tennessee Health Science Center - Dean, College of Pharmacy

TN, Memphis

University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) seeks a collaborative and visionary leader to serve as its next Dean of the UTHSC College of Pharmacy. Building upon the longstanding and enviable reputation of the College of Pharmacy, and the college’s impressive academic successes under the prior dean, this is an extraordinary opportunity for a new dean to propel an internationally leading college of pharmacy through its next phase as part of a statewide health sciences center campus in the midst of historic transformation, including a dynamic new Chancellor, Dr. Peter Buckley.

With a long tradition of excellence and remarkable growth over the last decade, the college is ranked amongst the top 20 programs of pharmacy by US News & World Report, and one of the top 15 schools as ranked by NIH funding. In addition to impressive healthcare and academic partnerships, the college has three campuses including the UTHSC campus in Memphis, as well as Nashville and Knoxville, with more than 680 PharmD students and 65 faculty members. Its student body is one of the most diverse in the nation, including nearly 20 percent Black and African American student representation. The Memphis campus programs and Dean’s suite are strategically housed in a 150,000 sq. foot state of the art educational and research building and recent renovations at UTHSC include outstanding state-of-the art laboratory space. With great facilities across the state, a cohesive faculty and national leadership among the college’s faculty and partners, the incoming dean will inherit a strong foundation to build towards the future.

As the Chief Academic and Executive Officer for the College of Pharmacy, the Dean is charged with overseeing the research, clinical, educational, philanthropic and community outreach work of the college, and its efficient conduct and management. A primary responsibility of the Dean is to facilitate productive relationships with affiliated clinical partners, community partners, and aligned research institutions and other universities to ensure high quality pharmacy education, advance patient-centered care and promote research and innovation. The Dean will develop and execute a clear vision for continued success and growth, enhance collaborative research opportunities and scholarly activity, ensure a vibrant and diverse academic environment, enhance philanthropy and community engagement, and support, promote and establish programs that both advance the profession of pharmacy and address the needs of the public.

The incoming dean will hold a doctoral degree in pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in a related field, and be eligible for appointment as a full professor. The ideal candidate will have an exceptional record as teacher, investigator and service leader with proven ability to manage a complex academic enterprise, typically obtained through experience as a dean, associate dean, department chair, or center/institute director within a college of pharmacy. Candidates should have demonstrated scholarly achievement of national recognition and have a broad understanding of complex issues of clinical pharmacy practice in today’s healthcare environment, with a vision for where pharmacy practice, research and education are headed.
