WittKieffer is proud to be supporting The University at Albany (UAlbany) in its search for the next dean for the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). Strategically located in the state capital of New York, UAlbany is an internationally recognized Carnegie R1 public institution with a diverse population of more than 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students, more than 50 majors and more than 150 graduate degree programs. As one of the newer colleges at UAlbany, CEAS offers an outstanding education in an expanding range of the engineering sciences. CEAS is a research-intensive college in the tradition of the best high-caliber public programs in the country. The cornerstone of the college is the Department of Computer Science with a record of achievement going back decades to its founding in 1967. Additionally, the program in Electrical and Computer Engineering was established in 2016 and the program in Environmental and Sustainable Engineering, unique in the nation, was launched in 2019. Programs in several other engineering disciplines are also currently in development.

The Dean of CEAS is the chief academic and administrative officer of the college and reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The dean is responsible for leading CEAS in all aspects of its research, teaching and service mission, and for fund-raising to support that mission. To head these diverse efforts, the university is seeking an accomplished academic and administrative leader who has the experience, energy and entrepreneurial talent to meet the college’s long-term objectives. The next dean should be eager and prepared to further develop the assets of CEAS into a coherent enterprise that advances and transmits knowledge and inspires a diverse generation of students to pursue careers not only in engineering and applied sciences, but also careers and/or postgraduate studies in fields as varied as medicine, law, finance, management, and more.

The ideal next Dean of UAlbany’s CEAS will possess a number of qualities and qualifications. The successful candidate will present an established record of scholarship along with the demonstrated ability to lead the growth and continuing development of CEAS. The successful candidate also will understand the academic culture and ethos of a diverse public research university and will possess the appetite and skills to develop financial and human resources. Such a candidate will have the collaborative leadership capability to build productive partnerships within and beyond the UAlbany university setting. Above all, the next Dean of CEAS must have a commitment to students and a passion for the educational enterprise that constitutes the core mission of the University at Albany.
