The University at Albany (UAlbany) seeks an inclusive, collaborative and innovative leader to serve as its new vice president of communications and marketing. Reporting directly to the president and as a member of the President’s Executive Council, the vice president will work closely with university leadership on strategic marketing and communication priorities across all academic and administrative divisions and develop and manage communications and marketing strategies that enhance public opinion, academic reputation, enrollments, and philanthropic support. Strategically located in the state capital of New York, UAlbany is an internationally recognized Carnegie R1 public institution with a diverse population of nearly 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students, more than 50 majors and 150 graduate degree programs.

The vice president oversees a team of 25 communications and marketing professionals. Together, they will identify and prioritize messaging to internal and external audiences; implement strategies to enhance the regional, national, and global engagement of prospective students, alumni, donors, and friends of the university; support advocacy among local, state and federal agencies and policy makers; and strengthen brand identity and recognition.

The vice president will strengthen the research enterprise by increasing the visibility, reach and impact of its efforts and discoveries locally, nationally and globally. The vice president will collaborate with key partners in the offices of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Diversity and Inclusion, and Enrollment Management to align marketing efforts to support UAlbany’s enrollment strategies, including implementing data-informed marketing plans measuring student recruitment, enrollment, retention, and graduation and clearly articulate the value of a UAlbany education to prospective students and families.

The successful candidate brings proven strategic leadership and highly developed writing and communication skills essential to interacting with multiple constituent groups. The university seeks a creative leader with a drive to innovate and try new things while inspiring and empowering others to do the same. The vice president will be a strategic thinker with broad functional experiences covering a range of communications and marketing disciplines.

The vice president must have experience in brand management, research, consumer insight and competitive market analysis, vendor negotiation and management, and advertising. Experience in public higher education, particularly at an institution of similar academic rank and recognition, is desired, but not required. A bachelor’s degree is required. Experience with executive communications, marketing campaign development, strategic planning, public relations, and crisis and issues management is highly desired. Finally, the vice president will be a courageous and collaborative leader with a record of support and advocacy for individuals from diverse identities, histories, backgrounds and experiences.
