University of Baltimore - Dean, Merrick School of Business
MD, Baltimore
The University of Baltimore (UBalt) is seeking a strategic, transformational Dean to lead the Robert G. Merrick Sr. School of Business (MSB) and play a key role in fulfilling the institution’s specialized mission of providing quality, professional undergraduate and graduate education. The new Dean will succeed Murray Dalziel, Ph.D. who has served in this role with distinction since 2014.
Celebrating its Centennial in 2025, UBalt excels in developing leaders in Baltimore and beyond, and is nationally recognized for serving a diverse, non-traditional student population. The University is a member of the 12-campus University System of Maryland and is organized into four schools/colleges, including the School of Law, the Merrick School of Business, the Yale Gordon Colleges of Arts and Sciences and the College of Public Affairs. In the fall of 2022, the University of Baltimore had a total enrollment of 3,710 students, all of whom are commuters.
The Merrick School of Business is accredited by AACSB International and enrolls about 400 undergraduate students (a majority of whom are transfer students) and 400 graduate students. With 31 full-time faculty, the school offers two undergraduate programs, six graduate programs, and seven certificate programs. The school has more than 28,000 alumni, with 65 percent living in Maryland.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Provost, the Dean is the chief academic, administrative and fiscal officer of the school. UBalt is seeking an experienced leader with the vision, leadership maturity, and management qualities necessary to build on the school’s reputation and take it to even higher levels of success. While a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree and previous teaching experience would be preferred, the university will consider candidates with exceptional leadership credentials acquired in non-academic settings and who convey a keen commitment to an academic mission.
The next Dean will be expected to:
- Focus on increasing enrollment in both graduate and undergraduate programs
- Be a strong advocate for the college within the University and The University System of Maryland as well as within the regional business community
- Maximize the value of the school’s state-of-the-art facility
- Generate new resources and build support with local and regional business communities
- Work closely with the Merrick School of Business Dean’s Advisory Council and other external boards which are comprised of alumni, business leaders and community members who support the school, its mission and its vision for the future
The preferred candidate will have proven experience to cultivate internal and external relationships, lead organizational change, create an open-minded, collaborative culture, raise funds, and perpetuate opportunities with the alumni base and the greater Baltimore business community. The Dean will express a passion for the mission of public education in an urban setting and the ability to persuasively articulate—both internally and externally—the school’s mission and values.
The desired candidate will have a strong business acumen and experience in strategic planning, fiscal and budget management, and organizational development. The ideal candidate will also have experience with traditional and online academic programming and innovation and effective engagement with the business community. Candidates should be open and transparent communicators who embrace shared governance and foster a positive work environment for the faculty and staff through mutual respect, collaboration, enthusiasm and inclusion. Experience with AACSB International and its accrediting principles and policies is preferred.
All applications, nominations and inquiries are invited. Applications should include, as separate documents, a CV or resume and a letter of interest addressing the themes in the leadership profile.
