Adams State University - President
Adams State University invites nominations, expressions of interest, and applications as it seeks a President to lead a new era of collaboration, innovation, and strategic direction to advance the University’s mission in support of students, faculty, and staff.
Founded in 1921 to serve the region’s educational and economic needs, Adams State University is the only four-year institution of higher education in the San Luis Valley, located in southern Colorado. With a total student population of 2,927 students (1,661 undergraduate and 1,266 graduate) that is 37% Hispanic (fall 2022), Adams State has been Colorado’s foremost four-year Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) since its designation by the U.S. Department of Education in 1998. Adams State also has a very high percentage of minority students overall (52%, fall 2022). Nearly 40% of Adams State students are the first in their families to attend college, and 45.5% are eligible for Pell grants. A regional, comprehensive liberal arts institution, Adams State offers 10 associate’s, 29 bachelor’s, and nine graduate programs. Located on a 90-acre campus, Adams State serves both residential and online students.
Adams State’s motto, “Great Stories Begin Here,” reflects its driving purpose, which is “to provide equitable access to education for all.” Adams State University draws on its rural location in the San Luis Valley of Colorado to serve and empower all students, especially those from historically underserved populations. Growth and change over the last 100 years have not eroded the ethos that has marked Adams State from the very beginning: to provide students with an exceptional opportunity to learn and grow and give them the individual care that allows them to succeed. Adams State’s vision statement is “to become the university community of choice for diverse, historically underserved groups and all who value quality education and inclusivity.” Adams State’s commitment to serving Hispanic, low-income, and other underrepresented students is reflected in the institution’s recently adopted 2025 Strategic Framework. The Framework ensures the institution meets internal goals to:
- Foster student achievement
- Champion practices for lifelong learning and development
- Advocate for equity and inclusion
- Engage in innovation and creativity
- Exemplify operational excellence
The next President of Adams State University will be an effective and engaging leader who possesses a compelling vision, administrative expertise, understanding of the dynamic higher education landscape, demonstrated interpersonal and political skills, and deep knowledge of complex finance systems and operations. They will inspire the University and community with a sound strategic vision, an ongoing commitment to academic excellence, an understanding of Adams State’s unique mission, and an ability to cultivate an appreciation of the diverse cultures and traditions of the San Luis Valley community. The next President of Adams State will play a seminal role in determining how the institution will move forward — by honing the University’s vision for its future, operationalizing Adams State’s HSI status, collaborating both internally and externally to gather resources and support, and building momentum to turn that vision into reality.
