Rutgers University–Newark (RU-N), an urban, public, research university that has long been recognized as one of the most diverse college campuses in the nation, invites applications and nominations for dean of its School of Arts & Sciences-Newark (SASN). RU-N is an anchor of its home city and recognizes its location as both a defining influence in its story and a distinctive strength. The campus completed a strategic visioning process underscoring this defining aspect of RU-N’s identity, yielding a strategic plan that is organized in broad areas that capture the scholarly expertise and civic-oriented interests in its work as an anchor institution:

The School of Arts & Sciences-Newark plays a major role in realizing this vision due to its size and scope as well as the very nature of its programs. With faculty and students from all over the world as well as the Newark community, SASN provides opportunities for academic exploration in a wide range of fields from studio art to neuroscience.
The dean is the chief academic officer of the School of Arts & Sciences-Newark, overseeing all academic programs and services, faculty hiring and development, and sponsored research. The new dean will maintain the highest standards of academic excellence, encouraging and prioritizing innovation as well as promoting research and thought leadership in a wide range of disciplines.
The school seeks an individual with demonstrated leadership ability and a deep commitment to education and research that crosses boundaries in the school, the university and the community. The new dean will be a true partner and collaborator with the provost and have an unwavering dedication to students and their success, a strong commitment to academic excellence and scholarship, a belief in and eagerness to promote shared governance, and the personal qualities of compassion and integrity. Experience as a scholar, educator and administrator is required, along with a terminal degree in a relevant field and requisite record of accomplishment.
