Hull York Medical School - Director, Centre of Skin Research

United Kingdom, York
Education

Hull York Medical School is a different kind of medical school. The School was established in 2003  – combining York’s strengths in biological science and health sciences and Hull’s large clinical base and expertise in clinical research. Since it was established, it has been inspiring doctors and academic leaders of the future with the research, skills and knowledge they need to look at things differently and advance improvements in healthcare around the world. We are currently undergoing one of the biggest transformations in our history, following the allocation of 90 additional medical school places as part of HEFCE’s 2017 Expansion of Undergraduate Medical Education, which represented a 70% increase in home places to 220 in 2019. This expansion has provided the investment to support a substantial increase in biomedical research posts at York over the next four-five years.

We are now seeking an outstanding scientist to lead the development of a new interdisciplinary Centre for Skin Research based on our University of York campus. The Centre will be part of the York Biomedical Research Institute, drawing strengths from across the Medical School, NHS Trusts and the wider University community to drive discovery and translational research related to skin physiology, microbiology and immunology in health and disease.

The appointee will have an outstanding established international reputation for skin research and have the ambition, motivation and personal skills required to develop the Centre into a leading national and international centre of excellence. Interdisciplinarity will be at the heart of the Centre’s vision and evidence of conducting interdisciplinary research, and in promoting this in others, will be essential qualities for the new Director. The Centre will consolidate and expand international strengths in skin research, currently focused on neglected infectious diseases, wound healing and cancer and act as a catalyst for new research, focused on skin physiology, immunology, microbiology and experimental medicine that can also embrace and exploit our strengths in the physical and social sciences. Excellent facilities are available for research on humans and experimental models, including a translational research facility suitable for early phase clinical studies and the capacity for imaging across scales.

The successful candidate will have an existing externally-funded and relevant research programme, an excellent track record of management in a senior role and good knowledge of UK and international funding paths. A clinical qualification is not essential for the role.  The Medical School is committed to providing at least six posts at Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor level, in order to support the development of the Centre, and the postholder will therefore play a significant role in shaping the research direction through these appointments. The new Director of the Centre will have a proven ability to lead and create a working environment that is stimulating, collegial, empowering and which promotes diversity and inclusivity.
