The University of California San Diego seeks an innovative, experienced and collaborative leader, steeped in the scholarship of teaching and learning, to serve as its Faculty Director of the Teaching + Learning Commons.

The Teaching + Learning Commons advances teaching excellence and student success across the campus by supporting faculty and students. The establishment of the Commons in 2015 was a direct outcome of the UC San Diego Strategic Plan and the UC San Diego Education Initiative. The Commons’ programs create a contiguous, multi-layered support network that enhances learning and increases academic success, while forming a strong foundation for scaling many campus educational efforts. The faculty director will provide strategic vision and leadership to further the mission of the Commons to advance student success through teaching excellence and comprehensive academic support in light of a complex and ever-changing higher education landscape.

The Commons consists of six complementary hubs: Engaged Teaching, Digital Learning, Academic Achievement, Writing, Experiential Learning and the Education Research + Assessment Hub. Together, they embody the intertwined relationship between teaching and learning. Through its wide range of programs, services and research, the Commons assists all campus members in developing learning environments and experiences for their students that encourage engagement and foster student success.

The faculty director will have a demonstrated record of scholarship, publications or creative works and teaching that merits a tenured (ladder rank series) or security-of-employment (teaching professor series) faculty appointment as professor or associate professor at the University of California San Diego. The faculty director will have a demonstrated knowledge of the scholarship of teaching and learning, intimate experience with and understanding of the academic culture of a research university and the ability to manage diverse stakeholders in a consensus-driven culture. A dynamic leader who is skilled in understanding and utilizing proven strategies to navigate complex and matrixed environment, the faculty director will hold a deep commitment to collaboration, relational leadership, external engagement and creative problem solving and thinking. The faculty director will demonstrate exceptional administrative, financial and managerial acumen, possess experience with strategies for and assessment of technology-enhanced learning and be committed to enhancing the inclusivity and equity of the campus teaching and learning environment.

Established in 1960, UC San Diego is one of the most prominent research universities in the world, with an enrollment of more than 38,000 students, annual research expenditures of $1.35 billion and revenues of more than $4.5 billion. The campus—ranked fifth among public universities by U.S. News and World Report—encompasses seven undergraduate residential colleges, five academic divisions and five graduate and professional schools, including a medical school, school of pharmacy and school of marine sciences. UC San Diego employs over 2,800 faculty, of which 201 are members of one or more of the three National Academies.
