University of Maryland Medical System - Senior Vice President and General Counsel

WittKieffer has been retained by the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), located in Baltimore, MD, to aid in the recruitment of the System’s next Senior Vice President and General Counsel (SVP and General Counsel).

The University of Maryland Medical System is a university-based regional health care system comprised of thirteen hospitals. With patient revenue of $4.5B, UMMS is one of the largest employers in the state with approximately 28,000 employees and 4,000 affiliated physicians who provide care in more than 150 locations across the state. The System’s academic flagship hospital, University of Maryland Medical Center, is a national and regional referral center for trauma, cancer care, transplant, neurocare, cardiac care, women’s and children’s health, and physical rehabilitation. The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center is world-renowned for its innovations in trauma care and efforts to advance medicine devoted to the care of the critically injured patient. The UMMC also includes one of the world’s largest solid organ transplant programs, as well as scores of other programs that improve the physical and mental health of thousands of people daily.

Reporting directly to the System Chief Executive Officer, the SVP and General Counsel will be a member of the UMMS executive leadership team and serve as Secretary of the Board. S/he will work closely with the CEO and executive leadership team to help set and implement UMMS’ overall strategic direction. The SVP and General Counsel will provide guidance on all legal initiatives including advising on corporate and commercial transactions, litigation, employment, regulatory matters, intellectual property, and other aspects of system development and integration. S/he will oversee outside counsel and lead a high performing, effective legal team. The SVP and General Counsel will serve as a mentor to the legal team and identify opportunities to further develop the team.

The ideal candidate will be a highly engaged and visible executive with a strong health law background. Candidates should possess a law degree from an ABA accredited school of law and have membership or be eligible for membership in the Maryland State Bar. Candidates should have a strong track record of success supporting an integrated health care delivery system.
