Carle Health System, the leading healthcare provider in central Illinois has retained WittKieffer to seek an innovative, dynamic and collaborative physician leader with a strong clinical and academic foundation to serve as Carle’s Medical Director, Behavioral Health.

Based in Urbana, Illinois, Carle is a physician led, vertically integrated Healthcare system caring for a patient base of 1.4 million. Carle is anchored by the Level I trauma, 433-bed, Carle Foundation Hospital in addition to a 118-bed community hospital; a 24-bed critical access hospital; Carle Medical Group, the 597 physician multispecialty group; the Health Alliance Health Plan and numerous health related businesses. The System is closely aligned with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and, in partnership, has established the new Carle Illinois College of Medicine, which just accepted its first class in 2018. 

This Medical Director, Behavioral Health, will be at the forefront as Carle seeks to improve how behavioral health services are delivered, while bringing extraordinary value, quality and safety outcomes to patients and their families within the community. The Medical Director, Behavioral Health will provide overall physician executive leadership for Carle’s behavioral health services, including psychiatry, psychology, and all associated sub-specialties.

In partnership with the Vice President administrative dyad, the Medical Director, Behavioral Health is responsible for the successful implementation of the Behavioral Health strategic plan; direction and oversight of all clinical operations and has clinical and operational accountability for Behavioral Health overall performance. The Medical Director, Behavioral Health is expected to improve clinical quality and the efficiency of care delivery, while evaluating performance expectations associated with patient safety requirements and clinical outcomes. 

Candidates should have ten or more years of clinical practice in behavioral health, with five years of progressive leadership experience in a multi-specialty behavioral health group, or serving as a physician executive of a related clinical service line/clinical institute. Board Certification in Psychiatry is preferred and an added advanced degree is also highly desired. The key to this position’s success will be the ability to develop strong collaborative relationships and to work well with multiple partners within Behavioral Health, as well as referral sources and senior leadership throughout the Carle Health System. The Medical Director, Behavioral Health must be comfortable operating in a highly matrixed environment to be an effective leader.
